Publicis Media's Erica Krauss on the Importance of Developing New Talent

Erica Krauss began her career as a sales assistant in spot cable TV. After hearing from friends about what it was like to work at an ad agency, she decided to make the leap. Erica secured a position as an analyst on OMD's print team. There she connected with mentors who showed her the ropes and gave her advice that shaped her career. After holding positions at leading agencies, she's currently senior vice president of media investment at Publicis Media. She's also a member of the AAM Board of Directors.

Erica shares what excites her about her current role, what she's most proud of and where she thinks the industry is headed.

How did you choose your career?

I went to college with the dream of becoming a reporter for the New York Times, but personal events led me to rethink my career path. One of my best friends was an advertising major (she now runs her own small account shop). Knowing that I enjoy working with numbers, storytelling and interacting with people, she encouraged me to consider a career in media. Her suggestion put me on this path, and I am eternally grateful.

 

Anything about the industry that’s surprised you?

I'm constantly surprised by the rate of change within the industry. When I started, I couldn't have predicted the rate of acceleration that would occur in media. My college was one of the first campuses where Facebook launched, so I was an early user. I never imagined it would become what it is today.

 

What excites you about your current role?

I love mentoring young talent. My current role allows me to do that while teaching that talent about new media channels.

 

What word describes your organization?

Pioneering.

 

How has AAM supported your company?

AAM has been a tremendous resource in establishing best practices for transparency with our publishing partners. AAM is doing a lot to bring transparency to digital publishers that will continue to help agencies and buyers as they consider more diverse media selections.

 

What are you most proud of in your career?

I'm proud of being nimble and adaptable throughout my nearly 20-year career. Where I started is nowhere near where I am today, and having a strong foundation combined with good mentorship allowed me to remain curious and open to change.

 

What advice would you give someone starting out in your field?

Be open and be curious. Media is moving at warp speed these days. Every day there is something new to learn and understand what that means for your immediate job and future.

 

Where do you see the industry in 10 years?

I think there will be fewer silos as media channels and tactics continue to converge and overlap. By applying best practices we've established in one area, we can address and improve upon the shortcomings experienced in other areas through enhanced cross-channel expertise.

 

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I'm not at one of my kids' sporting activities, I'm baking or reading a good book, usually picked out by my book club.

 

What goal would you like to achieve?

Since I enjoy mentoring, one of my goals is to make a difference in at least one person's career. I'd love to know that I helped someone learn and grow the way others have helped me. If I can do that, I'll know I have left a mark in this business.
